Honoring the Journey Toward Freedom

On June 19, 2025, the Lexington Freedom Train Committee unveiled Towards Freedom, a powerful sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Basil Watson. The monument honors Lewis and Harriet Hayden, formerly enslaved in Lexington who later became influential abolitionists in Boston, where they operated an Underground Railroad safe house that sheltered more than 100 freedom seekers.

The sculpture also stands in remembrance of the many enslaved people from Lexington who courageously sought freedom through the Underground Railroad. Located at Lexington Middle School, 350 N. Limestone Street, the monument will soon become the centerpiece of Towards Freedom Park, a new space for learning, reflection, and community engagement.

Building the Park

The Committee’s first phase secured the permanent monument. The second phase — now underway — will create a meaningful park setting around it, featuring:

• Interpretive poetry

• Historical context panels

• A Lexington Timeline tracing the city’s history and the Hayden’s journey

  To help complete this phase, the Committee is launching a BuyaBrick Campaign, inviting community members to leave a lasting tribute within the park.

BuyaBrick: A Lasting Tribute

Supporters may purchase engraved bricks to:

• Honor loved ones

• Recognize families or organizations

• Celebrate contributions to freedom

Each brick becomes part of the park’s pathways and gathering spaces — a permanent symbol of
community support and remembrance.

Friends of Towards Freedom Park

The third phase will establish Friends of Towards Freedom Park, a community based group dedicated to preserving the space and the history it represents. Planned efforts include curriculum development, landscape care, website stewardship, tours, and community learning events — ensuring the Hayden’s legacy continues to educate and inspire future generations.
